Perry was the daughter of Laurie Metcalf (actor) and Jeff Perry (actor). Her first roles on television included two episodes in the role of Jackie Harris (as seen in flashback) on the ABC sitcom Roseanne as the character played by her mother. Her parents did not allow her to start acting in front of her family until the age of adulthood because they were afraid of the stress it would cause. Perry acknowledged that she was not at ease in the stage during high school. However, she began performing as a means to connect with new people at Northwestern University after switching from Boston University. Perry was able to land small TV roles in Law & Order: Criminal Intent after she graduated. However, her homesickness caused her to move back to California and she returned working in the stage. Her mother and she appeared on Broadway with her in The Other Place, in 2013. In 2015, she was a part of her father and Kevin McKidd in Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize-winning play Anna Christie at the Odyssey Theatre Ensemble in West Los Angeles. Perry played a part in nine episodes on ABC's drama The Family during 2016. She had a regular role in the ABC drama about politics Scandal, starring her dad. That same year her character was cast a younger model of Mary Cooper (Sheldon Cooper's mother) on Young Sheldon, a spin-off of the CBS sitcom The Big Bang Theory again as a teen version of her mother's role. The role was selected via auditions though she had a close relationship with the show.
